Beijing will be hosting the Winter Olympics 2022. An international ideas competition with prequalification was organized to plan the many new large-scale facilities. A team from Canada, Australia, France, Finland and Switzerland were each nominated for the idea competition for planning the locations for ski jumping, cross-country skiing and biathlon. Küchel Architects was part of the Swiss team and in collaboration with Generis AG, Fanzun AG and BG Consulting Partner we convinced the Olympic Committee with our concept.
Inspired by the Olympic rings, the Swiss project team developed an idea that impressed the Olympic Committee: An Olympic ring as a functional building "The Ring" that combines all requested infrastructure in one building. All sports activities are accessible from the ring and garantees a highly sufficient sustainable Architecture.
The skijump was modeled on the wing beat of a bird and symbolizes the link to the "Bird's Nest" in Beijing, where the opening ceremony for the 2008 Games has already taken place. This has made a strong reference to the story and at the same time set a milestone for the post-Olympic development of the whole. The architecture has been completely determined by the principle of sustainability and complemented by a sophisticated traffic and security concept, so that the "ring" also after the Olympics can be established as a modern sports center with experience-oriented character.
Individual ideas from the exciting competition project will be pursued by the Olympic Committee in the implementation and hopefully contribute to make the Olympic Games 2022 in Beijing for athletes and visitors, also thanks to the Swiss expertise, a unique experience with many emotions Sustainable Region.
